Gujarati-style Masoor Dal Curry
Gujarati-style Masoor Dal Curry is a traditional and flavorful dish from the Gujarati Cuisine. This hearty and nutritious lentil curry is a staple in Gujarati households and is best enjoyed with steamed rice or roti.
Ingredients
- 1 cup masoor dal (red lentils)
- 2 cups water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 green chili, slit lengthwise
- 1 tsp ginger, grated
- 1 tsp garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp cumin powder
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- 2 tbsp oil
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the masoor dal under running water until the water runs clear. Drain the dal and set it aside.
- In a pressure cooker or a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add the asafoetida, chopped onion, green chili, ginger, and garlic. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
- Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and oil starts to separate from the masala.
- Add the rinsed masoor dal to the pot and stir well to coat the dal with the masala.
- Pour in the water and stir. If using a pressure cooker, close the lid and cook for 3-4 whistles. If using a pot, cover and cook for about 20-25 minutes or until the dal is soft and fully cooked.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve the Gujarati-style Masoor Dal Curry hot with steamed rice or roti.
