Gulai (spicy Grilled Okra)
Gulai is a traditional Batak dish that features spicy grilled okra, perfect for those who enjoy a kick of heat in their meals.
Ingredients
- 500g fresh okra, washed and dried
- 3 tbsp cooking oil
- 2 red chilies, sliced
- 4 shallots, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- Preheat the stovetop grill over medium heat.
- In a bowl, mix the okra with 2 tbsp of cooking oil, ensuring they are evenly coated.
- Grill the okra for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are charred and tender.
- In a separate pan, heat the remaining 1 tbsp of cooking oil over medium heat.
- Add the sliced red chilies, shallots, and garlic, and sauté until fragrant.
- Stir in the turmeric, coriander, cumin, and salt, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
- Pour in the coconut milk and water, then bring to a simmer.
- Add the grilled okra to the pan, simmer for 5 minutes, and then remove from heat.
- Serve the Gulai hot with steamed rice.
