Gulai (stuffed Grilled Banana Blossom)
Gulai is a traditional Batak dish that features stuffed grilled banana blossom, a unique and flavorful delicacy. This recipe combines the earthy taste of banana blossom with a rich and aromatic coconut milk-based sauce, creating a truly memorable dish.
Ingredients
- 2 banana blossoms, cleaned and sliced
- 200ml coconut milk
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 red chilies, sliced
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
Instructions
- Prepare the banana blossoms by removing the tough outer layers and slicing them thinly.
- In a pan, heat the cooking oil and sauté the onion, garlic, and red chilies until fragrant.
- Add the turmeric, coriander, and cumin powder, and stir for a minute.
- Pour in the coconut milk and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Add the sliced banana blossoms and let them cook in the coconut milk mixture for 15-20 minutes, or until tender.
- Season with salt and sugar, then remove from heat.
- Stuff the cooked banana blossoms with the coconut milk mixture.
- Grill the stuffed banana blossoms over medium heat for 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are slightly charred and aromatic.
- Serve the gulai hot with steamed rice.
