Guyanese Style Beef Patties

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon thyme, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, turmeric, curry powder, and salt. Add the chilled butter and use your fingers to rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  2. Add cold water, a little at a time, and mix until a dough forms. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. In a skillet, cook the ground beef, onion, garlic, thyme, hot pepper sauce, and black pepper until the beef is browned. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each portion into a circle on a floured surface.
  5. Place a spoonful of the beef filling on one half of each circle, leaving a border. Fold the other half of the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Use a fork to crimp the edges.
  6. Place the patties on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
