Gyathuk (sikkimese Spiced Rice)
Gyathuk is a traditional Sikkimese spiced rice dish that is packed with flavor and perfect for a comforting meal. This recipe combines aromatic spices with tender rice to create a dish that is both satisfying and delicious.
Ingredients
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 1 carrot, julienned
- 1/2 cup green peas
- 2 green chilies, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups water
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
- Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and sauté until they start to splutter.
- Add the chopped onion and green chilies. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
- Stir in the diced tomatoes, julienned carrots, and green peas. Cook for 5 minutes.
- Add the turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and garam masala. Mix well to coat the vegetables.
- Add the rinsed basmati rice to the pot and stir to combine with the vegetables and spices.
- Pour in the water and season with salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.
- Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
