Haak Saag (हाक साग)

हाक साग (Haak Saag) is a traditional Kashmiri dish made with tender greens and aromatic spices. This nutritious and flavorful dish is a staple in Kashmiri cuisine and is often enjoyed with steamed rice or flatbread.

Haak Saag (हाक साग)

Ingredients

  • 500g tender greens (haak)
  • 2-3 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp mustard oil
  • 2 cups water

Instructions

  1. Wash the tender greens thoroughly and chop them finely.
  2. Heat mustard oil in a pan and add cumin seeds and asafoetida. Let them splutter.
  3. Add green chilies and sauté for a minute.
  4. Add the chopped greens, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
  5. Pour water and cook the greens on medium heat until tender.
  6. Once the greens are cooked, mash them slightly with the back of a spoon.
  7. Simmer for a few minutes and then remove from heat.
