Hainanese Braised Pork Belly

Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs (700g) pork belly, cut into thick slices
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 shallots, finely chopped
- 1 thumb-sized ginger, sliced
- 2 star anise
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp five-spice powder
- 2 cups water
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large pot, blanch the pork belly slices in boiling water for 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Heat some oil in the pot and sauté the garlic, shallots, and ginger until fragrant.
- Add the blanched pork belly, star anise, soy sauce, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, five-spice powder, and water to the pot. Bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours until the pork belly is tender and the sauce has thickened.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the Hainanese Braised Pork Belly hot with steamed rice.
