Hainanese Braised Tofu With Mushrooms
Hainanese Braised Tofu with Mushrooms is a classic dish from Hainan cuisine that features tender tofu and savory mushrooms braised in a flavorful sauce. This vegetarian dish is perfect for a comforting and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 block (14 oz) firm tofu, cut into cubes
- 1 cup shiitake mushrooms, sliced
- 1 cup button mushrooms, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (or vegetarian oyster sauce for a vegan option)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 cup vegetable broth
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the tofu cubes and pan-fry until golden brown on all sides. Remove the tofu from the pan and set aside.
- In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed and sauté the garlic and onion until fragrant.
- Add the sliced shiitake and button mushrooms to the pan and cook until they start to soften.
- Pour in the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, and vegetable broth. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Gently add the pan-fried tofu back into the pan, making sure it's submerged in the sauce. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the tofu to absorb the flavors of the sauce.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve the braised tofu and mushrooms hot with steamed rice.
