Hainanese Braised Tofu With Mushrooms

Ingredients

  • 1 block (14 oz) firm tofu, cut into cubes
  • 1 cup shiitake mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 cup button mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (or vegetarian oyster sauce for a vegan option)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the tofu cubes and pan-fry until golden brown on all sides. Remove the tofu from the pan and set aside.
  2. In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed and sauté the garlic and onion until fragrant.
  3. Add the sliced shiitake and button mushrooms to the pan and cook until they start to soften.
  4. Pour in the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, and vegetable broth. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer.
  5. Gently add the pan-fried tofu back into the pan, making sure it's submerged in the sauce. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the tofu to absorb the flavors of the sauce.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve the braised tofu and mushrooms hot with steamed rice.
