Hainanese Five-spice Duck
Hainanese Five-Spice Duck is a classic dish from Hainan Cuisine, known for its aromatic and flavorful spices. This recipe combines the richness of duck with the warm and fragrant flavors of five-spice powder, creating a delicious and comforting dish.
Ingredients
- 1 whole duck, about 4 lbs
- 2 tablespoons five-spice powder
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 thumb-sized ginger, sliced
- 4 green onions, chopped
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil
- 4 cups water
Instructions
- Rinse the duck and pat dry. Rub the duck inside and out with a mixture of five-spice powder and salt.
- Heat the cooking oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the minced garlic, ginger, and green onions. Sauté until fragrant.
- Add the duck to the pot and brown on all sides.
- Pour in the soy sauce and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 2 hours, or until the duck is tender.
- Remove the duck from the pot and let it rest for 10 minutes before carving.
- Strain the cooking liquid and serve as a sauce for the duck.
