Hakka Spicy Braised Beef Noodles is a classic dish in Hakka cuisine, known for its bold flavors and tender beef. This recipe combines the heat of Sichuan peppercorns with the rich, savory taste of braised beef, creating a satisfying and comforting noodle dish.
Ingredients
- 1 lb beef brisket, sliced
- 4 bundles of dried wheat noodles
- 3 tbsp Sichuan peppercorns
- 4 dried red chilies
- 1 onion, sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2-inch ginger, sliced
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
- 2 tbsp Shaoxing wine
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 6 cups beef broth
- 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large pot, dry roast the Sichuan peppercorns and dried red chilies until fragrant. Remove and set aside.
- Heat some oil in the same pot and brown the beef slices. Remove and set aside.
- Saute the onion, garlic, and ginger until fragrant. Add the roasted Sichuan peppercorns and dried red chilies back to the pot.
- Pour in the soy sauce, dark soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, and sugar. Stir to combine.
- Add the browned beef slices back to the pot and pour in the beef broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours until the beef is tender.
- Cook the wheat noodles according to package instructions.
- To serve, place a portion of noodles in a bowl and ladle the braised beef and broth over the noodles. Garnish with chopped green onions.
