Ham Bread (pan De Jamón)
Ham Bread, or Pan de Jamón, is a traditional Venezuelan Christmas bread filled with ham, raisins, and olives. It's a delicious and savory treat that is perfect for sharing with family and friends during the holiday season.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1/2 pound cooked ham, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup pitted green olives, sliced
- 1/2 cup raisins
- 1/4 cup melted butter for brushing
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Pour the yeast mixture into the flour mixture and stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out into a large rectangle. Layer the ham, olives, and raisins evenly over the dough. Roll the dough into a log and place it seam side down on a greased baking sheet.
- Brush the top of the loaf with melted butter. Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the ham bread for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let the bread cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
