Harees (omani Spiced Rice Pudding)
Harees is a traditional Omani dish that is enjoyed during special occasions and celebrations. This spiced rice pudding is hearty, comforting, and bursting with rich flavors.
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole wheat grains
- 1 cup basmati rice
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 6 cups water
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Wash the whole wheat grains and soak them in water for 2 hours.
- In a large pot, combine the soaked whole wheat grains, basmati rice, ground cardamom, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, and water.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the grains and rice are completely soft and the mixture has a porridge-like consistency.
- Season with salt to taste and continue to cook for another 10 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let it cool slightly before serving.
