Harira (spiced Lamb And Chickpea Stew)
Harira is a traditional Bukharan Jewish stew that is rich in flavor and history. This hearty dish is made with spiced lamb, chickpeas, and a blend of aromatic spices, making it the perfect comfort food for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 1 lb lamb, cubed
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
- 6 cups chicken or beef broth
- 1/2 cup lentils
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the lamb and cook until browned on all sides.
- Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot. Cook until the onion is soft and translucent.
- Stir in the cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger, and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Pour in the diced tomatoes, chickpeas, lentils, and broth. Season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the stew to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the lamb is tender and the flavors have melded together.
- Stir in the chopped cilantro and parsley just before serving.
