Harira (spiced Lamb And Chickpea Stew)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lamb, cubed
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 6 cups chicken or beef broth
  • 1/2 cup lentils
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the lamb and cook until browned on all sides.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot. Cook until the onion is soft and translucent.
  3. Stir in the cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger, and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the diced tomatoes, chickpeas, lentils, and broth. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Bring the stew to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the lamb is tender and the flavors have melded together.
  6. Stir in the chopped cilantro and parsley just before serving.
