Hazaragi Spiced Lamb and Chickpea Curry (Qorma-e Gosht-o-Chana)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lamb, cut into chunks
  • 1 cup dried chickpeas, soaked overnight
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, pureed
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  2. Add the chopped onions and cook until they are golden brown.
  3. Add the garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Cook for 2 minutes.
  4. Add the lamb chunks and cook until they are browned on all sides.
  5. Stir in the tomato puree, yogurt, and all the spices. Cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Add the soaked chickpeas and enough water to cover the meat and chickpeas. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 1 hour or until the meat is tender.
  7. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with rice or naan.
