Hezi (xinjiang Style Stuffed Bell Peppers)
Hezi is a traditional Uyghur dish from Xinjiang, China, consisting of stuffed bell peppers. This recipe features a flavorful filling of ground meat, rice, and aromatic spices, making it a delicious and satisfying dish.
Ingredients
- 4 large bell peppers
- 1 lb ground lamb or beef
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions
- Cut the tops off the bell peppers and remove the seeds and membranes.
- In a large bowl, mix together the ground meat, cooked rice, chopped onion, garlic, cumin, paprika, cinnamon, salt, and pepper.
- Stuff the bell peppers with the meat and rice mixture.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Place the stuffed bell peppers in the skillet and cook for 5 minutes, then add 1 cup of water to the skillet.
- Cover and simmer for 40 minutes, or until the peppers are tender and the filling is cooked through.
- Serve the Hezi hot, with a side of yogurt or salad if desired.
