Ingredients

  • 1 head of cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and blanch them in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  3. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll them up, tucking in the sides as you go.
  4. In a separate pot, combine the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Place the cabbage rolls in the pot, cover, and simmer for 1 hour.
  5. Serve the Holubtsi hot, topped with the tomato sauce from the pot.
