Honduran Corn Tortillas (Tortillas de Maíz)
Tortillas de Maíz are a staple in Honduran cuisine, made from masa harina (corn flour) and water. These delicious and versatile corn tortillas can be enjoyed on their own or used as a base for a variety of dishes.
Ingredients
- 2 cups masa harina
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the masa harina and salt.
- Slowly add the warm water to the masa harina mixture, kneading it with your hands until a smooth dough forms.
- Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball.
- Place a ball of dough between two sheets of parchment paper and flatten it with a tortilla press or a heavy pan to form a thin, round tortilla.
- Carefully peel off the top parchment paper and transfer the tortilla to a hot, dry skillet or griddle.
- Cook the tortilla for about 1 minute on each side, or until it puffs up and develops light brown spots.
- Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls, stacking the cooked tortillas on a plate and covering them with a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and pliable.
