Honey-Glazed Baklava (Bal Kaplı Baklava)
Bal Kaplı Baklava, also known as Honey-Glazed Baklava, is a traditional dessert from Crimean Tatar cuisine. This sweet and flaky pastry is made with layers of phyllo dough, nuts, and a sweet honey glaze.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo dough
- 1 1/2 cups of mixed nuts (such as walnuts, pistachios, and almonds), chopped
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of honey
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix the chopped nuts with cinnamon.
- Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Place a sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets, brushing each with butter.
- Sprinkle a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.
- Layer 4 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter, and sprinkle with the nut mixture. Repeat this process until all the nut mixture is used, finishing with a final layer of 8 sheets of phyllo dough, each brushed with butter.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the baklava is baking, make the honey glaze by combining the sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
- When the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the honey glaze over the hot pastry.
- Allow the baklava to cool before serving.
