Honey-Glazed Baklava (Bal Kaplı Baklava)

Bal Kaplı Baklava, also known as Honey-Glazed Baklava, is a traditional dessert from Crimean Tatar cuisine. This sweet and flaky pastry is made with layers of phyllo dough, nuts, and a sweet honey glaze.

Honey-Glazed Baklava (Bal Kaplı Baklava)

Ingredients

  • 1 package of phyllo dough
  • 1 1/2 cups of mixed nuts (such as walnuts, pistachios, and almonds), chopped
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix the chopped nuts with cinnamon.
  3. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  4. Place a sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets, brushing each with butter.
  5. Sprinkle a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.
  6. Layer 4 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter, and sprinkle with the nut mixture. Repeat this process until all the nut mixture is used, finishing with a final layer of 8 sheets of phyllo dough, each brushed with butter.
  7. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. While the baklava is baking, make the honey glaze by combining the sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  10. When the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the honey glaze over the hot pastry.
  11. Allow the baklava to cool before serving.
