Honey Glazed Char Siu (蜜汁叉烧)

Ingredients

  • 500g pork shoulder, cut into long strips
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine garlic, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, Chinese rice wine, five-spice powder, sesame oil, and red food coloring in a bowl to make the marinade.
  2. Add the pork strips to the marinade, ensuring they are well coated. Marinate for at least 4 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.
  3. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  4. Place the marinated pork strips on a wire rack set over a baking tray. Bake for 30-35 minutes, basting with the remaining marinade every 10 minutes.
  5. Turn the oven to broil and cook for an additional 5-7 minutes to caramelize the glaze.
  6. Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
