Hong Shao Rou (stewed Pork In Soy Sauce)
Hong Shao Rou, also known as Stewed Pork in Soy Sauce, is a classic dish in Shaanxi Cuisine. It features tender pork belly braised in a flavorful mixture of soy sauce, sugar, and spices, resulting in a rich and savory dish that is perfect for serving with steamed rice.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs pork belly, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp Shaoxing wine
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1-inch piece of ginger, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 star anise
- 2 dried red chilies
- 2 green onions, cut into 2-inch pieces
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the pork belly cubes and cook until browned on all sides.
- Add the soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, and sugar to the pot. Stir to coat the pork evenly.
- Add the ginger, garlic, star anise, dried red chilies, and green onions to the pot. Stir to combine.
- Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1 hour, or until the pork is tender.
- Once the pork is tender, uncover the pot and continue to simmer until the sauce has thickened.
- Remove the pot from the heat and serve the Hong Shao Rou hot with steamed rice.
