Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs pork belly, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp Shaoxing wine
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 star anise
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • 2 green onions, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the pork belly cubes and cook until browned on all sides.
  2. Add the soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, and sugar to the pot. Stir to coat the pork evenly.
  3. Add the ginger, garlic, star anise, dried red chilies, and green onions to the pot. Stir to combine.
  4. Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1 hour, or until the pork is tender.
  5. Once the pork is tender, uncover the pot and continue to simmer until the sauce has thickened.
  6. Remove the pot from the heat and serve the Hong Shao Rou hot with steamed rice.
