Horsegram Soup Rice, also known as Ulava Charu Annam, is a traditional Andhra cuisine dish that is both nutritious and delicious. This recipe combines the goodness of horsegram with the comfort of rice, making it a wholesome and satisfying meal.

Horsegram Soup Rice (ulava Charu Annam)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup horsegram
  • 1 cup rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves for garnish
  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil

Instructions

  1. Wash the horsegram and rice together and soak for 30 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker, heat ghee or oil and sauté the chopped onions until they turn translucent.
  3. Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, and sauté for a minute.
  4. Now, add the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes turn mushy.
  5. Drain the soaked horsegram and rice, and add them to the pressure cooker.
  6. Add 4 cups of water and pressure cook for 4-5 whistles or until the horsegram is soft.
  7. Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and mix the contents well. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed.
  8. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
