Hot Lentil Rice (bisi Bele Bath)
Hot Lentil Rice, also known as Bisi Bele Bath, is a traditional and flavorful dish from Karnataka Cuisine. This one-pot meal is a perfect blend of lentils, rice, and aromatic spices, making it a wholesome and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup rice
- 1/2 cup tuvar dal (split pigeon peas)
- 1/2 cup masoor dal (red lentils)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1/2 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, beans)
- 3-4 tbsp Bisi Bele Bath masala powder
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp tamarind paste
- 2-3 tbsp ghee or oil
- Salt to taste
- 4-5 cups water
Instructions
- Wash and soak the rice and dals for 20 minutes.
- Heat ghee or oil in a pressure cooker and sauté the onions until golden brown.
- Add the tomatoes, mixed vegetables, and cook until they turn soft.
- Add the soaked rice and dals, Bisi Bele Bath masala powder, turmeric powder, tamarind paste, salt, and water. Mix well.
- Cover the pressure cooker and cook for 3-4 whistles or until the rice and dals are cooked.
- Once done, let the pressure release naturally and then open the cooker. Mix the Bisi Bele Bath well and adjust the consistency if needed.
- Serve hot with a dollop of ghee or a side of raita.
