Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs beef brisket, cut into chunks
  • 3 slices ginger
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 green onions, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 3 dried red chilies
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Shaoxing wine
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1.5 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Water

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add ginger, garlic, green onions, dried red chilies, star anise, and cinnamon stick. Stir-fry until fragrant.
  2. Add the beef chunks and sear until browned on all sides.
  3. Pour in soy sauce, dark soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, and sugar. Stir to coat the beef.
  4. Pour in beef broth and add enough water to cover the beef. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
  5. Season with salt to taste. Serve the braised beef hot with steamed rice.
