Hungarian Apple Strudel (Almás Rétes)
Almás Rétes, or Hungarian Apple Strudel, is a classic dessert that is popular in Hungarian cuisine. This delicious pastry is filled with sweetened apples, cinnamon, and walnuts, all wrapped in a flaky, buttery crust.
Ingredients
- 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 8 sheets phyllo dough
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, mix the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and chopped walnuts until well combined.
- Place one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it with melted butter. Repeat with the remaining sheets, stacking them on top of each other.
- Spoon the apple mixture along one long edge of the phyllo stack, leaving a border on the sides. Fold the short edges over the filling, then roll the strudel up from the long edge, using the parchment paper to help lift and roll.
- Transfer the strudel to a baking sheet, seam side down. Brush the top with more melted butter.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the strudel is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Let the strudel cool for a few minutes, then dust with powdered sugar before slicing and serving.
