Hungarian Plum Dumplings (Szilvásgombóc)

Ingredients

  • 6-8 ripe plums, pitted
  • 2 cups mashed potatoes
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup semolina
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the mashed potatoes, flour, egg, semolina, sugar, and salt to form a dough.
  2. Divide the dough into small portions and wrap each portion around a pitted plum, forming a smooth ball.
  3. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and carefully drop the dumplings into the boiling water. Cook for about 10-12 minutes or until the dumplings float to the surface.
  4. In a separate pan, melt the butter and add the breadcrumbs. Toast the breadcrumbs until golden brown.
  5. Roll the cooked dumplings in the buttery breadcrumbs until coated.
  6. Serve the Szilvásgombóc dusted with powdered sugar.
