Hungarian Sweet Bread (Kalács)
Kalács, also known as Hungarian sweet bread, is a traditional pastry that is popular in Hungarian cuisine. This sweet and fluffy bread is perfect for breakfast or as a dessert with a cup of coffee or tea.
Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 ounce active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk and let it sit for 5 minutes.
- Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
- If using raisins, gently fold them into the dough.
- Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Transfer the risen dough to a greased loaf pan and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.
- Bake the kalács in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool before slicing and serving.
