Hungarian Sweet Bread (Kalács)

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 ounce active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. If using raisins, gently fold them into the dough.
  5. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Transfer the risen dough to a greased loaf pan and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  8. Bake the kalács in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool before slicing and serving.
