Ika (fish) And Kalo (taro) Tacos
Ika (Fish) and Kalo (Taro) Tacos are a traditional Niuean dish that combines the fresh flavors of fish with the earthy taste of taro. This recipe is a delicious and unique way to experience Niuean cuisine.
Ingredients
- 4 fillets of fresh fish
- 2 large taro roots, peeled and sliced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 1 cup coconut cream
- 1 lime, juiced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 8 small tortillas
Instructions
- Season the fish fillets with salt, pepper, and lime juice. Let them marinate for 10 minutes.
- In a large skillet, heat some coconut cream over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent.
- Add the marinated fish fillets to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the fish is cooked through.
- In another skillet, heat some coconut cream over medium heat. Add the sliced taro and cook until golden brown and crispy on the edges.
- Warm the tortillas in a dry skillet or over an open flame.
- Assemble the tacos by placing a few pieces of cooked fish and taro on each tortilla. Top with diced tomatoes and a drizzle of coconut cream.
- Serve the Ika and Kalo Tacos with lime wedges on the side.
