Israeli Shakshuka Bagel
Shakshuka is a popular Israeli dish made with poached eggs in a spicy tomato and pepper sauce. In this recipe, we'll put a unique twist on the traditional shakshuka by serving it in a bagel, creating a delicious and portable meal.
Ingredients
- 4 bagels
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 eggs
- Feta cheese for topping
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the tops off the bagels and hollow out the centers to create a well for the shakshuka.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the garlic, cumin, paprika, and cayenne pepper to the skillet, and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes and season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened slightly.
- Divide the shakshuka sauce among the hollowed-out bagels. Make a well in the center of each bagel and crack an egg into it.
- Place the filled bagels on a baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the egg whites are set but the yolks are still runny.
- Top with crumbled feta cheese and fresh parsley before serving.
