Istanbul Street Shawarma (İstanbul Sokak Şavurma)
İstanbul Sokak Şavurma is a popular street food in Turkey, especially in Istanbul. This flavorful and aromatic dish is made with tender, marinated meat that is cooked on a vertical rotisserie and then thinly sliced. It is typically served in a wrap with fresh vegetables and a drizzle of tangy yogurt sauce.
Ingredients
- 500g boneless lamb or chicken, thinly sliced
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp coriander
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 pita bread or lavash wraps
- Sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions for serving
- Fresh parsley for garnish
- Yogurt sauce (mix 1 cup yogurt, 1 tbsp lemon juice, 1 clove minced garlic, salt and pepper)
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the sliced meat, chopped onion, minced garlic, olive oil, paprika, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Mix well to coat the meat evenly. Marinate for at least 1 hour or overnight in the refrigerator.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated meat and cook for 10-15 minutes, or until the meat is browned and cooked through.
- Warm the pita bread or lavash wraps in the oven or on the stovetop.
- To assemble the shawarma, place a generous amount of the cooked meat on the warm bread, top with sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions. Drizzle with yogurt sauce and garnish with fresh parsley.
- Roll up the wrap and serve immediately.
