Jaretina ispod peke, or Peka-style Lamb Shanks, is a traditional Croatian dish that is slow-cooked to perfection. The dish is named after the bell-shaped dome used for cooking, called "peka."

Jaretina Ispod Peke (peka-style Lamb Shanks)

Ingredients

  • 4 lamb shanks
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 potatoes, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Season the lamb shanks with salt, pepper, and dried rosemary.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  4. Sear the lamb shanks until browned on all sides, then remove from the pot and set aside.
  5. Add the onions, garlic, carrots, and bell peppers to the pot and sauté until softened.
  6. Pour in the red wine and chicken broth, then return the lamb shanks to the pot.
  7. Cover the pot with a lid or aluminum foil, and transfer to the preheated oven.
  8. Cook for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the lamb is tender and falling off the bone.
  9. Serve the lamb shanks with the vegetables and pan juices.
