Jeera Rice (fragrant Cumin Rice)

Jeera Rice, also known as Fragrant Cumin Rice, is a popular Indian dish made with basmati rice and cumin seeds. It is a simple yet flavorful side dish that pairs well with a variety of Indian curries and gravies.

Jeera Rice (fragrant Cumin Rice)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the basmati rice under running water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and sauté for 1-2 minutes until they start to sizzle and become fragrant.
  3. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown.
  4. Now, add the rinsed basmati rice to the pan and sauté for 2-3 minutes, stirring gently to coat the rice with the ghee and cumin seeds.
  5. Pour in the water and add salt. Stir gently and bring the mixture to a boil.
  6. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let the rice simmer for 12-15 minutes or until all the water is absorbed and the rice is cooked through.
  7. Fluff the rice with a fork and let it rest, covered, for a few minutes before serving.
