Jeera Rice (fragrant Cumin Rice)
Jeera Rice, also known as Fragrant Cumin Rice, is a popular Indian dish made with basmati rice and cumin seeds. It is a simple yet flavorful side dish that pairs well with a variety of Indian curries and gravies.
Ingredients
- 1 cup basmati rice
- 2 cups water
- 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Rinse the basmati rice under running water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
- In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and sauté for 1-2 minutes until they start to sizzle and become fragrant.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown.
- Now, add the rinsed basmati rice to the pan and sauté for 2-3 minutes, stirring gently to coat the rice with the ghee and cumin seeds.
- Pour in the water and add salt. Stir gently and bring the mixture to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let the rice simmer for 12-15 minutes or until all the water is absorbed and the rice is cooked through.
- Fluff the rice with a fork and let it rest, covered, for a few minutes before serving.
