Kaalan Curry (chettinad Mushroom Curry)
Kaalan Curry, also known as Chettinad Mushroom Curry, is a flavorful and aromatic dish from the Chettinad cuisine of Tamil Nadu, India. This vegetarian curry is made with a unique blend of spices and coconut, creating a rich and creamy gravy that pairs perfectly with steamed rice or Indian breads.
Ingredients
- 250g button mushrooms, sliced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp fennel seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 2 tbsp oil
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan and add fennel seeds and cumin seeds. Sauté until fragrant.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Stir in ginger-garlic paste and cook for a minute.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Now, add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Add sliced mushrooms and cook until they are soft and tender.
- Meanwhile, grind the grated coconut with a little water to make a smooth paste.
- Add the coconut paste to the mushrooms and mix well. Simmer for a few minutes.
- Sprinkle garam masala and garnish with fresh cilantro.
- Remove from heat and serve hot with steamed rice or Indian breads.
