Kadalebele Payasa is a traditional sweet dish from Mangalurean Cuisine, made with coconut, jaggery, and chana dal. It is a creamy and delicious dessert that is often prepared during festivals and special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chana dal
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1 cup jaggery
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 10-12 cashew nuts
  • 1 tbsp raisins

Instructions

  1. Wash the chana dal and pressure cook with 2 cups of water until soft.
  2. In a separate pan, melt the jaggery with 2 cups of water to make a syrup.
  3. Add the cooked chana dal and grated coconut to the jaggery syrup and mix well.
  4. Cook on low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Add cardamom powder and mix well.
  6. In a small pan, heat ghee and fry the cashew nuts and raisins until golden. Add this to the payasa and mix well.
  7. Simmer for another 5 minutes and then remove from heat.
  8. Serve hot or cold as per preference.
