Kakaviri (coconut Crab Curry)
Kakaviri, also known as Coconut Crab Curry, is a traditional dish from Niuean cuisine that features the rich flavors of coconut and the succulent meat of the coconut crab.
Ingredients
- 1 coconut crab, cleaned and cut into pieces
- 2 cups coconut milk
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon curry powder
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon coriander
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Heat coconut oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add chopped onion and minced garlic, sauté until fragrant.
- Add curry powder, turmeric, cumin, and coriander, stir for 1-2 minutes.
- Add coconut crab pieces, coat with the spice mixture.
- Pour in coconut milk, season with salt and pepper, and bring to a simmer.
- Cover and cook for 45-50 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the crab is cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice.
