Kalan Masala (creamy Mushroom Masala)
Kalan Masala, also known as Creamy Mushroom Masala, is a popular dish in Malaysian Indian cuisine. This rich and flavorful dish is made with a creamy coconut milk base and a blend of aromatic spices, making it a comforting and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 200g button mushrooms, sliced
- 1 can (400ml) coconut milk
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
- Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the pan, and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Stir in the ground cumin, ground coriander, turmeric, and chili powder. Cook for 1 minute to toast the spices.
- Add the sliced mushrooms to the pan and cook until they are slightly browned.
- Pour in the coconut milk and season with salt. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the mushrooms are tender and the sauce has thickened.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice or naan.
