Kalan Matar Masala, also known as Creamy Mushroom Matar Masala, is a delicious Malaysian Indian dish that combines the earthy flavors of mushrooms with the sweetness of green peas in a rich and creamy gravy. This vegetarian dish is perfect for a comforting meal with a side of rice or naan.
Ingredients
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 1 cup green peas
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, pureed
- 1/2 cup cashew nuts, soaked and blended into a paste
- 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons oil
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute. Then, add the tomato puree and cook until the oil separates.
- Stir in the garam masala, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook for a few minutes.
- Add the sliced mushrooms and green peas. Mix well and cook for 5-7 minutes.
- Pour in the cashew nut paste and mix thoroughly. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Finally, add the heavy cream and simmer for a few minutes until the gravy thickens.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or naan.
