Kalduny Carnival (Калдуны)
Калдуны (Kalduny) are a traditional Belarusian dish, similar to dumplings, typically filled with meat, mushrooms, or cheese. They are a popular dish during the Carnival season and are enjoyed by many across Belarus.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 lb ground pork
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 cup mushrooms, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup shredded cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the flour, egg, and water to form a dough. Knead the dough until smooth, then cover and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, combine the ground pork, onion, mushrooms, cheese, salt, and pepper to make the filling.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut it into circles using a glass or cookie cutter.
- Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each circle, then fold the dough over and seal the edges to form a half-moon shape.
- Boil the kalduny in salted water for about 5-7 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
- Remove the kalduny from the water and serve hot.
