Kane Biryani, also known as Spicy Prawn Biryani, is a flavorful and aromatic dish from the Mangalurean Cuisine. This dish is a perfect blend of spices and prawns, creating a mouthwatering experience for seafood lovers.

Kane Biryani (spicy Prawn Biryani)

Ingredients

  • 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1/2 cup chopped coriander leaves
  • 1/2 cup chopped mint leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon biryani masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 tablespoons ghee
  • 2 tablespoons oil

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak the basmati rice for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. Heat ghee and oil in a large pot. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and green chilies. Sauté for a few minutes.
  4. Stir in the chopped tomato and cook until it turns mushy.
  5. Add the prawns, turmeric powder, red chili powder, biryani masala, and garam masala. Cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Layer the soaked rice over the prawn masala. Pour in the yogurt and sprinkle half of the chopped coriander and mint leaves.
  7. Pour water over the rice, add salt, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes until the rice is done.
  8. Garnish with the remaining coriander and mint leaves. Serve hot.
