Kari Ayam (spicy Chicken Satay)
Kari Ayam is a traditional Batak dish that features tender chicken pieces marinated in a flavorful blend of spices and then grilled to perfection. This spicy chicken satay is a popular dish in Batak cuisine, known for its rich and aromatic flavors.
Ingredients
- 1 kg chicken, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 5 shallots, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 red chilies, finely chopped
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 lemongrass stalk, bruised
- 400 ml coconut milk
- Salt to taste
- Wooden skewers, soaked in water
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the shallots, garlic, red chilies, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder to make the marinade.
- Add the chicken pieces to the marinade and mix well to coat the chicken. Let it marinate for at least 1 hour in the refrigerator.
- Thread the marinated chicken pieces onto the soaked wooden skewers.
- Heat a grill or stovetop grill pan over medium-high heat. Grill the chicken skewers for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked and slightly charred.
- In a separate pot, bring the coconut milk and lemongrass to a simmer. Add the grilled chicken skewers to the coconut milk and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
- Season with salt to taste and serve the Kari Ayam hot with steamed rice.
