Kava Smoothie, also known as 'Otai 'ava, is a traditional Tongan beverage made with kava root and coconut milk. This creamy and earthy smoothie is a popular drink in Tonga and is often served at special occasions and gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1 cup kava root, peeled and chopped
- 2 cups coconut milk
- 1/4 cup honey or sugar (optional, to taste)
- 1 cup ice cubes
Instructions
- In a blender, combine the chopped kava root and coconut milk.
- Blend on high speed for 3-4 minutes until the kava root is well incorporated into the coconut milk.
- Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove any remaining kava root fibers.
- Return the strained liquid to the blender and add honey or sugar, if using, and ice cubes.
- Blend again until smooth and frothy.
- Pour the kava smoothie into glasses and serve immediately.
