Key Wat Firfir (eritrean Style Meatball Curry)
Key Wat Firfir is a traditional Eritrean dish that features spicy meatballs in a flavorful curry sauce. This dish is perfect for those who enjoy bold and aromatic flavors.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup berbere spice mix
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 2 cups beef broth
- 4 slices of injera bread, torn into small pieces
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, half of the chopped onions, half of the minced garlic, berbere spice mix, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into meatballs.
- Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the meatballs and brown on all sides. Remove the meatballs from the pot and set aside.
- In the same pot, add the remaining onions and garlic. Cook until softened.
- Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes.
- Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer.
- Return the meatballs to the pot and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through.
- Add the torn injera bread to the pot and stir to combine. Cook for an additional 10 minutes, or until the bread has dissolved and the sauce has thickened.
- Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper, if needed.
