Kibbeh Batata (assyrian Mashed Potato Casserole)
Kibbeh Batata is a traditional Assyrian dish that combines mashed potatoes with flavorful spices and ground meat, creating a delicious and comforting casserole. This dish is perfect for a cozy family dinner or a special gathering.
Ingredients
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 lb ground beef or lamb
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup pine nuts, toasted
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Boil the diced potatoes in a large pot of salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash the potatoes with a potato masher or fork.
- In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the ground meat to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in the ground cumin, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
- Spread half of the mashed potatoes in the bottom of a greased casserole dish. Top with the cooked meat mixture.
- Cover the meat layer with the remaining mashed potatoes, smoothing the top with a spatula.
- Sprinkle the toasted pine nuts and chopped parsley over the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- Let the Kibbeh Batata cool for a few minutes before serving.
