King Cake, also known as Galette des Rois, is a traditional French pastry enjoyed during the Epiphany season. This delicious cake is made with flaky puff pastry and filled with almond cream, making it a delightful treat for celebrating the arrival of the Three Kings.
Ingredients
- 2 sheets of puff pastry
- 1 cup almond flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp almond extract
- 1 small trinket or figurine (for the tradition)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a bowl, mix the almond flour, sugar, butter, eggs, and almond extract until smooth.
- Place one sheet of puff pastry on a baking sheet and spread the almond cream mixture evenly, leaving a border around the edges.
- Place the trinket or figurine somewhere in the almond cream (traditionally, the person who finds it in their slice is crowned king or queen).
- Brush the edges of the pastry with water and place the second sheet of puff pastry on top, pressing the edges to seal.
- Brush the top with egg wash and use a knife to create a decorative pattern on the surface.
- Bake for 30 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown.
- Let it cool slightly before serving.
