Koli Curry (kodava Style Mutton Curry)

Ingredients

  • 500g mutton, cut into pieces
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp Kodava curry powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they start to splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  2. Add the ginger, garlic, and green chilies. Sauté for a few minutes until the raw smell disappears.
  3. Add the mutton pieces and cook until they are browned on all sides.
  4. Stir in the tomato puree, turmeric powder, Kodava curry powder, and salt. Cook for 5 minutes.
  5. Pour in the coconut milk and bring the curry to a gentle simmer. Cover and cook for 45-50 minutes, or until the mutton is tender.
  6. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
