Koli Curry (kodava Style Mutton Curry)
Koli Curry is a traditional Kodava style mutton curry that is rich in flavor and spices. This recipe is a staple in Kodava cuisine and is perfect for a hearty meal with family and friends.
Ingredients
- 500g mutton, cut into pieces
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 3 tomatoes, pureed
- 1/2 cup coconut milk
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tbsp Kodava curry powder
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they start to splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the ginger, garlic, and green chilies. Sauté for a few minutes until the raw smell disappears.
- Add the mutton pieces and cook until they are browned on all sides.
- Stir in the tomato puree, turmeric powder, Kodava curry powder, and salt. Cook for 5 minutes.
- Pour in the coconut milk and bring the curry to a gentle simmer. Cover and cook for 45-50 minutes, or until the mutton is tender.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
