Koofteh Tabrizi (spiced Persian Meatballs)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, grated
  • 1/2 cup cooked rice
  • 1/4 cup yellow split peas, soaked
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 cups tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, grated onion, cooked rice, soaked yellow split peas, chopped parsley, chopped mint, turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  2. Form the mixture into large meatballs, about the size of a tennis ball.
  3. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides.
  4. Pour the tomato sauce over the meatballs, cover the pot, and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  5. Serve the Koofteh Tabrizi hot with rice or bread.
