Korean-inspired General Tso's Tofu (조선식 제너럴 토스 두부)

Ingredients

  • 1 block firm tofu, drained and cubed
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (slurry)
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture, then cut into cubes.
  2. Coat the tofu cubes in cornstarch.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and fry the tofu until golden and crispy. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add garlic and ginger, and cook until fragrant.
  5. Stir in soy sauce, rice vinegar, water, and brown sugar. Bring to a simmer.
  6. Add the cornstarch slurry to the sauce, stirring constantly until thickened.
  7. Return the crispy tofu to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce.
  8. Serve the General Tso's tofu over rice, garnished with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
