Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Beat 1 egg and oil into the yeast mixture.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into 3 equal parts. Roll each part into a long rope.
  8. Braid the ropes together and tuck the ends under the loaf.
  9. Place the loaf on a baking sheet, cover with a towel, and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  11. Beat the remaining egg and brush it over the risen loaf.
  12. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown.
  13. Let the challah cool before slicing and serving.
