Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup warm water
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Beat 1 egg and oil into the yeast mixture.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 3 equal parts. Roll each part into a long rope.
- Braid the ropes together and tuck the ends under the loaf.
- Place the loaf on a baking sheet, cover with a towel, and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Beat the remaining egg and brush it over the risen loaf.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown.
- Let the challah cool before slicing and serving.
