Kosovan Shepherd's Pie (Tavë Kosi)
Tavë Kosi is a traditional dish from Kosovan cuisine, made with tender lamb and creamy yogurt. This hearty and comforting dish is perfect for a cozy family dinner or a special gathering.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds lamb shoulder, cut into chunks
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup rice
- 2 cups plain yogurt
- 3 eggs
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, brown the lamb chunks in butter over medium heat.
- Once the lamb is browned, remove it from the skillet and set aside.
- Add the rice to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Spread the rice in an even layer on the bottom of a greased baking dish.
- In a bowl, whisk together the yogurt, eggs, flour, oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Pour the yogurt mixture over the lamb in the baking dish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour, or until the top is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
