Kässpätzle Casserole
Kässpätzle Casserole is a classic dish from Swabian cuisine, featuring tender egg noodles, savory cheese, and caramelized onions. This comforting casserole is perfect for a cozy family dinner or a gathering with friends.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cups grated Emmental cheese
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, eggs, milk, salt, and nutmeg to form a smooth, thick batter.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Using a spaetzle maker or a colander with large holes, press the batter into the boiling water to form small noodles. Cook for 2-3 minutes, then drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden and caramelized.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a greased casserole dish, layer half of the cooked spaetzle, half of the caramelized onions, and half of the grated cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
- Bake the casserole for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve the Kässpätzle Casserole hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
