La Zi Dou Fu (spicy Tofu Delight)

Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu, cubed
  • 2 tablespoons Sichuan peppercorns
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4-5 dried red chilies, deseeded and cut into small pieces
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. Heat a wok or skillet over medium heat and dry roast the Sichuan peppercorns for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Remove and crush them using a mortar and pestle.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in the same wok over medium-high heat. Add the dried red chilies, garlic, and ginger. Stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until aromatic.
  3. Add the tofu cubes and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until lightly golden.
  4. Next, add the crushed Sichuan peppercorns, soy sauce, sugar, salt, and water. Stir gently to combine all the ingredients.
  5. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce has thickened and coated the tofu evenly.
  6. Garnish with chopped green onions and serve hot.
